Minorities in Film

The films in the 1930s era, helped build lasting stereotypes for minority community especially for the african american community. Two stereotypes were especially prolific at this time. The first was called SAMBO stereotype, this view of african american males, generally held them to be lazy, care free individuals, usually of a criminal nature. The second stereotype which was exemplified in Gone with the wind, was the Mammy stereotype. This stereotype holds black women as compliant, fat, and spiritual, caregivers. While the stereotyping has changed over time, there are still traces of these old racist sentiments around today.
Examples: Aunt Jemima Syrup, Uncle Ben's Rice
