Bing Crosby

Bing crosby was a prolific performer.
He had over 2,000 recordings by the end of his career, and was in over 20 films just in the 1930s.
Bing Crosby ushered in a new era in music. In the previous era singers were required to sing very high or very loud in order to make themselves heard, the invention of the microphone allowed Bing's voice which was more friendly to flourish along with Radio technology.
Bing Crosby was one of the first big national media stars. His name and voice would have been known to many people in the 1930s.

I think it’s also important to note the Bing Crosby was so successful because of the type of music he was producing; he was making music about hardships people were actually experiencing, as in "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?"The fact that he became so wealthy and successful in a time when people were not buying records says a lot for how skilled he was. As you pointed out, he was known to everyone; his voice was a comforting symbol. Bill Crosby is really underappreciated for how much a part of the 1930s family he was.
