Leapin' Lizards!

Little Orphan Annie was originally a comic strip in the 1920s. It continued into the 30s and many decades following. In 1931, it became the first radio show geared toward children, though adults enjoyed it as well. Annie was a quick-witted redhead girl adopted by the extremely wealthy "Daddy" Warbucks. Her adventures dealt with everyday survival on the streets of New York as well as solving mysteries with her loyal dog Sandy and Daddy Warbucks of course. Though the stories were lighthearted, some of the humor and plotlines were dark for its time, dealing with the paranoia of the 1930s. Other topics brought up in the comic strip as well as the radio show were capitalism as well as the New Deal. Annie did everything from saving poor Sandy from a gang of boys to taking down the Nazis! Talk about girl power.

  2. I think I remember somebody saying in either class or mentor session that Little Orphan Annie was originally slated to be male but they decided to make the character female since there was such a lack of strong female characters in comic books.
