The Hobo Code

As we witnessed in the documentary Riding The Rails, many people in the US took to the Hobo way of life as a means of survival. In order to help communicate the things these wayfarers learned to each other, an entire Hobo Code was developed that was easy to read and easy to learn. You can find any number of these codes online, many of which are still in use by people who live this kind of lifestyle.

Not only was a visual code developed, but in 1894 a large gathering of Hobos put into place the Hobo Code of Ethics, a set of guidelines to give guidance and purpose to those who were new to the game. The Hobo life also had its own vernacular, much of which has been adopted by mainstream culture, too. Anyone alive in the 1930's would have a passing familiarity with these elements of the Hobo Life.

  1. If anyone has ideas that they think should acctualy be implemented on campus, post them here and i will talk to SALP. I think it's a really good idea and that, in a school of 26,000, this could help prevent freshmen from getting lost.

    Just my two cents
